New Cool Collective big band album featuring Thierno Koite out now!
Some of you might have heard it during the premiere on Manners.nl yesterday but today our new big band album featuring Senegalese saxophone player Thierno Koite (Orchestra Baobab) has officially been released! Over the last few years we have done a list of different projects with our 19 person big band formation and this is one that’s really special.
During a tour and recording session in Senegal in 2013, we met Thierno Koité after an Orchestra Baobab concert. The whole band had long been fans of Thierno, and Koité was a huge inspiration during our tour through Senegal. We exchanged phone numbers and in 2016 we combined forces to organise three concerts and a recording session with Thierno in The Netherlands, eventually resulting in a complete album.
The new album features a list of newly written compositions with Thierno Koite, as well as a couple of songs from Thierno’s own repertoire and even some of our own songs recorded in a new big band arrangement. We are really proud that our journey to Senegal has resulted in this collaboration with one of our favorite musicians.
The full album is now available on all music services.
”Most of all, the indomitable conversation of Koité’s alto sax with the big band’s smart West-Afro-Groove turns Featuring Thierno Koité into another significant addition to the catalogue of New Cool Collective.” – Flophouse Magazine
”New Cool has always drawn influences from the Caribbean and West Africa but Koite’s melodies give the band that extra tropical swing” – NRC
